Spinning Silver was initially a short story in Naomi Novik’s anthology named The Starlit Wood. However, seeing the premise and characters’ potential, she decided to expand Spinning Silver into a full fantasy novel. Well, that decision paid off, and now we have not only the best fantasy novel of 2018 but also one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written.
Spinning Silver’s story is told through several characters; however, it primarily focuses on three young women’s stories. The narrative shows their struggle with an evil force in the kingdom of Lithvas. The three primary protagonists of the story are women named Miryem, Wanda, and Irina. Miryem strives to save her father’s failing business and converts into a successful money-lending venture.
Wanda is a peasant who also lives in Miryem’s village, subjected to constant abuse from her drunken father. On the other hand, Irina is the daughter of a duke. Spinning Silver was one of the best-received books upon its release that instantly received nominations for the Huge Award in the novels category and became one of the Bestsellers.
Since the book takes huge inspiration from A Song of Ice and Fire by GRRM, it was praised for being a worthy spiritual successor. According to the New York Times, it is just the perfect song of ice and fire tale that has a great narrative and deep story.
