On the Come Up tells the story of Bri, who is a 16-year old girl wanting to become a rapper. She hopes to fill in her father’s shoes and wants to become a hip-hop legend; however, the path is not so easy. The book draws a lot of inspiration from 8 Mile starring Eminem; however, it manages to stay unique with its storytelling and character that are top-notch than any young-adult fiction novel.
Brianna Jackson a.k.a Bri or Lil Law is an aspiring rapper who wants to live up to her father’s legacy. She is a pretty great lyricist; however, she ends up creating controversy from one of her songs. These events lead to many students and teachers defaming, and she soon gains the hoodlum title. While that is entirely untrue, she ends up getting recognized as an aggressive person that hurts her in many ways.
As we have said, On the Come Up received particular praise for its deep characters, another of them is Jayda Jackson, Bri’s mother. She becomes a drug addict after the murder of her husband, and instead of providing a helping hand, she becomes another of the significant challenges Bri has to face. However, she gives up on drugs later in the story because of the fear of losing her kids for good.
