Uglies is a special book for young adults which beautifully draws a line between emotional and physical themes. Set in a dystopian society in the future, it brings us the story of Tally Youngblood who stands up the enforced conformity. According to the story, most people are born ugly in society and they have to change it before turning 16 through plastic surgery.

The terms ‘Ugly’ and ‘Pretty’ are quite different from what they are in our real world. For instance, everyone in the book is born ‘Ugly’ and is subjected to shame if they don’t become ‘Pretty’. Though the idea of this ‘Pretty-culture’ comes from our real world where the industry based on beauty products is a pretty big ordeal and we have got to change it.

She Tally sees all the downsides of becoming ‘Pretty’, as shown by her friends, she rebels. The story of Youngblood standing against this system is one of many thousands but with a unique perspective. Uglies became a huge success worldwide and was eventually turned into a trilogy.
