Last Stop on Market Street starts with the story of a young African-American boy named CJ. They are both coming from the Church on a Sunday and are accompanied by the rain. Feeling bothered by the rain, CJ asks his grandmother about why it has to rain and make them wet and comfortable. The nanny replies to the question wisely by saying that the trees need water too and that’s why God makes it rain.
A series of questions follow when they enter the bus and as the bus starts going, CJ sees his friend Colby riding home in his beautiful car with his father. So CJ asks his grandmother why they do not have a car and Colby has it. However, when they finally exit the bus and CJ witnesses a blind man and two guys playing guitar; he comes to realize the true beauty of the world.
Last Stop on Market Street is a book about a boy who gets curious about different questions that boggle his mind; however, he doesn’t understand the true meaning behind God’s plan.
