The author highlights this book with a fearsome story, on an evil who hides in the drain during rainstorms. A six-year-old boy named Georgie Denbrough sails a paper boat along the street before the paper boat washes down into the drain. There, he sees a clown, who is hiding in the drain, and introduces himself as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

Georgie Denbrough is convinced and trusts Pennywise to reach his hand into the drain and reclaim his boat, but he cuts his hand and leaves him to die. This novel deals with childhood trauma, the power of memory, and recurrent echoes in adulthood. Stephen King said that he thought of this story in 1978 and began writing it in 1981. He finished writing it in 1985 for publishing.

Cemetery Dance published this book in three special limited editions on December 13, 2011. The three editions were an unsigned limited-gifts edition of 2,750, a signed limited edition of 750, and a signed and lettered limited edition of 52 pages.

This book contains 1,138 pages, and it is the second-largest novel written by Stephen king. King said this novel is not based on a true story and, Pennywise is a fictional character. It was the most beloved book of its time, and the King did not plan to write a sequel.
