Young adult novels can sometimes follow the same cliched storylines that users have read for centuries. All of them start with a few characters that are up to something, they face downfall, and then win at the end. So there is a constant cycle of feeling well, then down for some time, and at the end, the feeling of triumph. An Ember in the Ashes is different because it does none of those things but is unique in its methods.
An Ember in the Ashes brings us the story of Laia and Elias. In the story, the former is a slave while the latter is a soldier, however, their lives aren’t quite different. Elias, despite being a soldier, is going through a slave-like traumatic life. This is an empire where pledging to the Emperor is the only option and if you don’t, get ready to be beheaded.
